Port Hedland Q1 Update 2026
The Port Hedland team had a strong start to 2026, celebrating several important achievements. Court Advocate graduations were a key highlight, with Hayley Annesley successfully supporting a client in court to obtain a two‑year Family Violence Restraining Order.
The team commenced Healing Hands in partnership with Yorgum, strengthening culturally appropriate healing and support services. Staff also continued building strong relationships by facilitating Community Education sessions with the Fortescue VTEC program, delivered quarterly.
AFLS was invited to participate in Court Users Meetings and to travel to Newman during Court Circuit with Magistrate Langdon, reflecting growing recognition of the service. Support capacity was further strengthened with the commencement of Hayley Love as Administration Officer, the introduction of a committed monthly solicitor schedule, and the receipt of a people‑mover vehicle to assist with client transport.
The region continues to experience challenges recruiting a permanent solicitor, which has impacted the ability to deliver consistent Community Legal Education (CLE). Travel to some service areas was limited during the quarter due to cultural practices and weather conditions.
Additional challenges included delays in receiving legal information for data recording and client follow‑up, along with pressures on the regional budget, particularly due to rising fuel and operational costs.
To address these challenges, the Port Hedland team has strengthened internal systems, formalising the use of ActionStep to improve file management, data entry, and client follow‑up processes. Improved internal outreach planning systems have also been introduced.
The team acknowledged strong support from Finance and Human Resources and continues to apply learning from DISC and Psychological Safety training to foster a supportive workplace culture. Regular staff “shout‑outs” have been introduced to recognise effort and encourage team morale.
Next quarter priorities include progressing discussions on team‑building activities, working with stakeholders to plan a Women’s Healing Camp, and continuing outreach across the service area. Plans are underway to commence a Prison Program, deliver an Ochre Ribbon Park Bench initiative, onboard a new Community Engagement Worker, and improve the Port Hedland office environment.
