Kununurra Q1 Update 2026

Kununurra Q1 Update 2026

This quarter showed strong progress in staff training, program delivery, and client outcomes. The team completed key training programs, including Love Bites and DV-alert, strengthening capability in delivering respectful relationships education and responding to family and domestic violence.

A specialised two-day training on the impacts of family violence on children further enhanced staff knowledge in trauma-informed practice and practical family support strategies.

Positive client outcomes were also achieved through the Criminal Injuries Compensation (CIC) clinic, where clients engaged directly with an assessor. Feedback indicated the process was highly therapeutic, with many clients feeling heard and supported.

A key challenge this quarter was the imbalance in referral types, with a high number of FVRO referrals from the Department of Communities and no new referrals for care and protection matters.

There were also inconsistencies in file management processes across regions, leading to confusion around action steps and file closure procedures, particularly impacting administrative support.

To address referral challenges, discussions have been initiated with the Deputy Director of Legal, with plans to meet with the Department of Communities to reinforce awareness of the full scope of services available.

File management processes have also been clarified following an on-site visit, with a shared understanding now established across the team. Written guidance is expected to further support consistency moving forward.

The team continued to strengthen partnerships through program delivery, including the Healthy Relationships Education sessions with the Shooting Stars program.

These sessions demonstrated strong engagement, with facilitators delivering content confidently and building meaningful connections with participants, reflecting growth in staff capability and community impact.

Next quarter will focus on expanding programs and strengthening regional collaboration. Upcoming initiatives include the launch of the OVAHS Women’s Group and the Legal Eagles Radio Program across Kununurra and Halls Creek.

The team is also contributing to the East Kimberley Social Support Forum, bringing together frontline workers to share services and resources.

In addition, new program and resource development is underway to better support children impacted by family violence, with a focus on culturally appropriate, trauma-informed tools for families and practitioners.
