Geraldton Regional Update Q1 2026
The Geraldton team has continued to deliver strong outcomes this quarter, with consistent service delivery and positive feedback from both community members and stakeholders. Staff engagement and program delivery have been recognised as strengths across the region.
Ochre Ribbon Week was a standout highlight, with both the Opening and Closing events well attended and warmly received. These events reinforced AFLS’s strong reputation in the community and supported ongoing relationship building with local stakeholders who attended, hosted information stalls, and engaged in meaningful conversations.
The team also welcomed two new staff members, strengthening local service capacity. Shaianne Cameron joined the office as Family Advocate in December 2025, bringing a caring and community‑focused approach with family connections to Yalgoo. Lauren Greatorex joined as the female Community Engagement Worker and has already made a significant impact through the development of a new early‑intervention program for young women.
Lauren’s “Strong Sisters, Strong Futures” program, delivered in partnership with Geraldton Senior High School and the Stars Foundation, has been highly engaging. The program supports girls experiencing attendance and engagement challenges, with noticeable improvements in attendance on program days. Lauren’s Midwest connections have also supported early and effective community engagement.
The departure of a solicitor in September 2025 created short‑term capacity pressures, with remaining staff required to manage client files internally. While this impacted workloads initially, most files have now been closed and the pressure has eased.
Like many regions, Geraldton continues to feel the impact of rising fuel and cost‑of‑living pressures. In addition, the high number of funerals affecting staff and their families has contributed to increased leave requirements and potential wellbeing impacts, creating both emotional and operational challenges.
To manage capacity challenges, the legal team has introduced improved processes for prioritising and managing client files. Enhanced initial client contact procedures are also helping to identify conflicts early and redirect clients to appropriate services, reducing unnecessary follow‑up and workload duplication.
Staff wellbeing remains a priority. Quarterly team‑building activities have been introduced to support morale, strengthen team connections, and provide space to decompress from demanding workloads. Staff collectively plan and lead these activities, creating a strong sense of ownership, positivity, and team cohesion.
The “Strong Sisters, Strong Futures” program currently supports 18 students from Years 7–12 and continues to achieve strong engagement. Planning is underway to develop a male equivalent, “Strong Brothers, Strong Futures,” aimed at working with boys through Geraldton SHS and Clontarf.
Outreach has been delivered to Meekatharra, Mullewa, and Yalgoo this quarter, with strong engagement noted particularly in Meekatharra. Future visits aim to further engage men in the community, including exploring the establishment of a community‑driven men’s group supported by AFLS and partner services. The next outreach visit to Mt Magnet and Cue is scheduled for late March.
Planning has commenced for National Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC events in collaboration with the Justice & Community Network Committee. National Reconciliation Week will be held on 27 May 2026, with the Geraldton NAIDOC event scheduled for 10 July 2026. Outreach to Mt Magnet and Cue will continue alongside ongoing community capacity building.
