
Solicitor – Aboriginal Family Legal Service (AFLS) – Marapikurrinya (Port Hedland)
Position: Solicitor - Must have 3-4 years post Restrictive Practice
Location: Marapikurrinya (Port Hedland), WA
Salary: $185,000 – $195,000 per year plus remote area salary packaging for Not-For-Profit Organisations. For further information on salary packaging please contact Human Resources.

We are looking for solicitors who are passionate and committed to working in a dynamic and diverse holistic legal service, working with clients, communities and families affected by family violence.
You will have the opportunity of working collaboratively with a team of both legal and non-legal staff, including aboriginal Court Advocates and Family Advocates to ensure clients receive a holistic service, whilst also having the skills and abilities to work autonomously.
This role requires a solicitor to work with and take advice from the Regional Manager of the office and the Deputy Director and/or Director of Legal Practice. The successful applicant/s reports directly to the Deputy Director of Legal.
The role would suit someone who is passionate about social justice and working in the community, has strong legal and communication skills, are able to liaise with diverse range of stakeholder / clients and can provide good sound legal and practical advice.
You will have the opportunity to work across a diverse range of cases, including Duty Lawyer services, shuttle conferencing services and delivering Community Legal Education.
The role includes:
- Providing sound legal advice to clients in a range of areas of law
- Casework
- Advocacy work
- Managing client files
- Drafting correspondence and court documents
- Working alongside Aboriginal Court Advocates
- Working alongside Family Advocates
- Working with Community Education Workers
- Appearing in various Courts throughout Western Australia
- Representing clients in mediations and other forms of ADR
- Delivering Community Legal Education
- Working closely with non-legal staff

TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION YOU NEED TO MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA
Essential:
- Be admitted for Practice in the Supreme Court of WA and have a current Legal Practicing Certificate from the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia, pursuant to the Legal Profession Act 2008 (WA)
- Must have 3-4 years post Restrictive Practice
- Experience in family law, care and protection matters, criminal injuries compensation or family violence restraining orders
- Excellent communication skills including oral and written
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability of working as part of a team with legal and non-legal staff
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal people
- Ability to travel to remote areas to deliver services to clients and the community
- Strong advocacy skills
- Must be able to take advice from the Regional Manager
- Be able to take instruction and advice from their Deputy Director and/or Director of Legal Practice
Desirable:
- Knowledge of and/or experience in working in the community legal services sector
- Experience in Court
- Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
